Women in Tech Weekly Issue 20

It’s Tuesday, meaning – it’s Women in Tech Weekly time! And I couldn’t be more excited to share with you stories of fascinating women who are doing great things in the tech industry. Who knows, maybe they will inspire you to follow your dreams as well, despite challenges you might face!

Celebrations ??

Milena is celebrating her PhD thesis/project milestone!

In her own words:

“After a year of failures, tests, adjustments, and learning so many new things I finally got to install my experiment at Oxford! Everything is set up for measurements which will take place in September and this is very exciting because these results are the first ones I can put in my PhD thesis.“

It took A YEAR, but I am finally here! 💪 After a year of failures, tests, adjustments, and learning so many new things I FINALLY arrived at RAL, the biggest laboratory in UK, with my supervisor to install the experimental setup. We are now waiting for some software stuff to be sorted out and then we are ready for measurements, which will take place in September. 👩‍🔬 ———————————————————————— I am SO HAPPY right now. I can’t even put it in words. 🎉 And now that this is done, I will have more time for instagram posts about physics, fun facts and numbers (on that note, go to my stories to see some corners of this laboratory). 😄 Hope you are having a wonderful and productive week! Love you all ♥️ ———————————————————————— #research #science #physics #gradstudentlife #gradstudent #phdstudent #experiment #laboratory #laboratorio #scienceblogger #ukblogger #optics #thorlabs #oxford #diamond #oxford_uk #diamondlightsource #experimentalphysics

Lindsey created her own nonprofit organization, STEMgirl group!

In her own words:

“So I had an idea to start my own stem group for girls. So I partnered up with the library starting in September I will be going in and showing girls cool experiments to get them interested and exposed to the stem field. Because women are still underrepresented in the stem field so I wanted to give elementary school kids a chance to experience the beauty of science. It’s a non-profit organization. And it’s basically going to be like an after school club / extracurricular ?“

Milly is celebrating that she got her Instagram account back!

In her own words:

“After 6 weeks that my account was wrongly disabled, last week I finally got it back. I am really happy to be able to share my journey as a Woman in Tech on Instagram again.“

How to deal with a new code base? – created and shared by Anna

Anna says:

“Every developer goes through the same challenges when joining a new team and getting familiarized with a new code base. After working in many teams and observing many great developers, I realized there are certain practices that help you the best to make this process less painful. I wrote 9 tips which can help new developers in making this process easier.”

How to deal with a new code base? . . Recently I joined a new team and started to work on a new application. Its very challenging and at times stressful🧐. But it does get better over time. After working in many teams and observing many great developers, I realized there are certain practices that help you the best to make this process less painful. . 💥9 tips to understand new codebase:💥 . . 1️⃣ Get a big picture of the application and features you will work on. . . 2️⃣ Find someone who worked with that code before and ask them to walk you through it. If you can, get a MENTOR! . . 3️⃣Debug, debug, debug! Try to break it, check errors, throw exceptions. . . 4️⃣Don't be stuck for too long, ask for help. Most likely there will be an easy answer from someone who already worked with this system. . . 5️⃣If you don't know something let others know. Faster you get up to speed faster you contribute to your team. Most likely people will be happy to answer your questions. . . 6️⃣ Ask for code review.👀Also pay attention to coding standards for your new team. ℹAsk if they have written coding guidelines. . . 7️⃣ Go through unit tests or write your own!✍ . . 8️⃣ Read All provided documentation.📃 . . 9️⃣Try to explain it to someone else🗣👥 . . I hope you'll find it useful👩‍💻👨‍💻 and if you are currently learning new codebase, what strategy do you use? What is the most challenging for you?⬇️ . Please let me know if you have any advice for me to add to my list⬇️ . . . . 🌸Happy Coding 🌸 . . . . . . . . . . . . . #code #developer #programming #stem

And two resources created and shared by me ?

Leadership skills are essential for anyone working today, regardless of field or position… Why? Because being a leader is so much more than just being in a management position in a big company. It is a way we interact with our surroundings, the way we move through the world of business. You don’t have to hold an official leadership title to exhibit leadership traits or to benefit from them. These are the ideas I’ve been contemplating, so I decided to talk to an expert. Check out the article to learn more! ?

Are you ready to become happier today? Let me share some of my main takeaways from an amazing course on Coursera (by Yale University), which is called The Science of Wellbeing. It’s an awesome course that shares so much insight into what makes us happier and gives simple practices to achieve that state. So here are 5 tips that I’ve learned from it so far – on how you can become happier today!

It’s always a pleasure to see women advancing in tech careers, setting a great example for any of you out there worrying that some obstacles are too difficult to overcome. Being a part of that kind of community always brings a smile to my face knowing that we are doing something every day to ensure a better future tomorrow. I would love to hear your story too, so don’t be shy, check out the submission form below and I’ll see you next Tuesday ❤️

Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below and if you’d like to share something for next week’s issue, here’s the submission form!! Bookmark that and add anything you’d like to share in there ?
