Hollie is awesome, this girl has a wonderful sense of humour and takes you on a really fun science journey. And she is working on a field of science that’s less widely known – lasers! About Hollie
I studied physics at university but I was always more intrigued by applications rather than fundamental physics. Now I’m doing research to develop a technique for high precision distance measurements using lasers for industrial applications. I’m really excited about the idea that the outcomes of my research may be used by people within my lifetime!
How did you get into tech?
I studied physics at university and now I’m doing a postgrad in photonics engineering. I love combining what I’ve produced being hands-on in the lab, with the code I’ve written to control or test it.
What languages/technologies do you have the most experience in?
Photonics, specifically developing lasers. I code in Matlab which is similar to C++.
What are you currently learning/practising?
I’m working towards getting my EngD in Applied Photonics. I’m hoping to finish in 2020.
What are your favourite resources to learn/stay updated on tech?
sciencedaily.com is a great website to quickly find the latest science and tech news.
What would people learn about by following you?
Follow me to see what it’s like to work in a laser lab. It’s very different from traditional biology and chemistry labs people usually imagine when they think of science!
What inspired you to start sharing your experiences on social media?
I wanted to provide another example of what a woman working in STEM looks like.
